Game Brainstorm

Research & Useful Sources

While doing research for this project I came across some useful webpages on creating games helping me to find ideas and inspiration and cement them. You might think that coming up with a game and designing it would be impossible, well, after reading through this webpage I feel greatly confident on doing so. This website takes you through a list of things that will help you get on your feet when it comes to game design. It takes you through steps ranging from the artwork of a game, to the coding. If you are in any way interested in game design I would recommend checking it out!  https://bit.ly/30RXYbv

I also found the information in this webpage particularly useful as it gave 10 simple steps to follow when creating your first game. https://bit.ly/2GK4jie

While searching the web I stumbled upon this page which gives a top 10 list of game genres in 2020. This proved valuable to me as it gave me further insight on what games I'd wish to create. With action games taking the number 1st spot and first person shooter games taking the 10th spot I felt it was important to attempt brainstorming the concept of an action/shooting game which led me to the game idea 'Vaccine Shoot' which features below in this blog . https://straitsresearch.com/blog/top-10-most-popular-gaming-genres-in-2020

The last link that I will include is one that is of great relevance to game design and can make the difference between an average and an exceptional game. On this website they highlight 10 traits that the worlds best games have in common, knowing and building towards these traits can make any game designers games improve significantly. I'll definitely be returning to this site throughout the course of this semester. https://bit.ly/2GFff0A

Game Idea 1

At the start of the week I found out I had to come up with four game concepts by the end of the week. Before I began brainstorming I've opened my mind to inspiration as I went about my orderly day. For this game idea I was inspired by a certain wall in my bedroom, this wall contains dozens of postcards and photographs all placed on my wall using blu tack. These postcards and photos are constantly falling from my wall which is where the idea generated from. I though to myself, I hate the way they always fall off the wall and then the idea came to me.

The concept is, there are pictures / postcards falling from your wall and you need to catch them and put them back in their place. As you catch the objects and put them back where they go you move through different levels of difficulty. The speed at which the objects are falling increases as you make your way through the levels as well as the quantity of objects coming your way rises. In a later level there also could be objects like framed photos that you avoid catching as you'll injure yourself doing so. As I brainstormed this idea I came to the conclusion that it might be possible to add a game mode where you can add your own photos to the wall and you'll have to catch some of your most cherished moments from hitting the floor!

Game Idea 2

I believe all of us can agree that sometimes there are days where everything just goes wrong no matter what you do. As stated in Murphy’s Law, “everything that can go wrong will go wrong”. This video game was inspired by the many times I have travelled to work or college in difficult circumstances such as bad weather, late busses or trains, traffic jams and any other possible obstacle that might stand in your way of getting to work. These days can be any day of the week from Monday to Sunday however these type of days that drag are usually described as a Monday feeling day which is where I got the inspiration for the name of the game known as ‘Work on Monday’.

The game begins as you leave your house to go to work. You can choose your method of transport for example you might want to travel via bike one day, car another, and bus or train another time. Each mode of transport comes with its own set of obstacles that will do their best to prevent you from getting to work on time. The aim of the game is to handle these obstacles with tools. An obstacle that could occur when walking could be the weather which slows the character down therefore you can have tools logged in your account such as a bike in that circumstance to speed your character up. Each mode of transport has a different time limit and once you complete the level you receive coins to purchase these tools to aid your mission. The more you arrive on time the more likely you are to receive a job promotion, coins and move around the game world to create more difficult and complex routes to work.

Game Idea 3

During the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic my friends and I were trying to find healthy ways of being social while respecting the social distancing guidelines. Due to the various canals and rivers based in Kildare we would try to go fishing as much as possible. One of my friends in particular became engrossed in this activity and invested in an inflatable boat which he could fish from. When I seen the boat the first thought that crossed my mind was, is that fully stable and what if something sharp poked a hole through the boat and it sunk. This thought is what inspired the concept behind my video game, ‘Don’t Sink’. When researching possible video games online similar to this idea it was clear to me that there was a gap in the market for a concept such as this one.

The video game is centered around a character sailing across water which has certain obstacles such as sticks or sharp rocks, you must avoid these obstacles. If the person playing the game knocks into the obstacles, the boat will start to tear and holes will appear. The player must quickly choose a tool and hold down onto the damaged part of the boat to repair it before the boat fills with water and sinks. In the first levels of the game the time limit is slower and there are less obstacles however as the game progresses the levels become more difficult with various obstacles. There is a reward element in this game where you can navigate the boat towards coins however the coins may be in difficult locations near possible obstructions. After you complete a level you will receive coins also. These coins can be used to purchase better equipment for the damaged boat or lifelines for new boats while staying on the same level. The aim of the game is ‘Don’t Sink’.

Game Idea 4

Due to the consumption of this current pandemic in our everyday lives I wanted to create a video game based on Covid-19. This video game is focused on eliminating the virus and saving the world. This action themed video game gives a slight glimpse of hope during this weary time while still providing users with a fun game. The video game known as ‘Vaccine Shoot’ and is a play on words for a vaccine shot which scientists are trying to create to aid the pandemic.

The game is based on the storyline that you have been chosen to join a group of army men hired to tackle the virus, guns on. There have been new scientific discoveries and scientists have invented goggles which you can see the virus in the air and landing on surfaces. You will be wearing a hazmat suit and these goggles to try and prevent the spread of Covid-19. Using your vaccine gun, you can shoot down the virus before it lands on civilians and causes an outbreak. It is your mission to save people from becoming infected. There is a challenge in the game that if you cannot kill the virus in time and it infects people, they can infect one another and once everybody is infected it is game over. If someone is infected and you shoot them with the vaccine they are cured however you must act fast because the virus spreads rapidly!

  1. Love the first game idea, pretty funny how you came up with it from just doing something so normal, i think you've proven inspiration really can come from anywhere. I think you could definitely go somewhere with this idea, especially as a mobile app or something along those lines.
For your second game idea, i wonder if you could implement power ups or something like that , say where a player would collect something and it would make them not take damage for a few seconds or go faster, if you wanted to you could even create de-buffs, that might make the player slower.
For your third game, what if you added planks of wood or a hammer or some kind of d.i.y. material floating in the water that the player could collect to repair their boat as they play, say if a player could take 3 hits to completely break the boat but each repair would add 1 more hit.

  2. Hey, Aaron, some really great game ideas there, looks like you went through a lot of effort in deciding which way that you will go with you game. I like how you were able to implement aspects of your life into some of your game ideas like the murphy's law one where you took experiences getting to college and turned it into a game.
